SCBI reaches out
to neighbor communities
For
the first quarter of 2012, San Carlos Bioenergy, Inc. (SCBI) embarked on a
number of community projects as part of its program on Corporate Social Responsibility. Having suffered huge financial losses in
prior periods due to unforeseen economic and market factors, SCBI adopted new
corporate strategies to ensure the continued survival of the company despite
economic odds. Rather than closing the
company completely to prevent further financial loses, SCBI opted to continue
its production operations, cognizant of its positive impact in the improvement
of the economy of San Carlos City.
Having gradually stabilized production operations in the past year and
with better economic prospects in the coming years, SCBI likewise revived its
community relations activities and implemented a number of social projects in
the first three months of the year.

For the
month of February, SCBI donated P 60, 000 worth of health monitoring apparatus,
supplies and assorted medicines for common illnesses to the health clinics of
Barangays I, Punao, and Palampas. These
included first-aid kits with BP apparatus, weighing scale, digital
thermometers, medicine drawer, medicine tool kit, and generic medicines for
common ailments such as colds, cough, fever, headache, cough, LBM,
hyperacidity, asthma, and muscle spasms and body pains, as well as medical
supplies like gauze, plaster, antiseptic solution, cotton balls, burn ointment
and lice solution.
In coordination
with the City Social Welfare and Development Office, a supplemental feeding
activity was also conducted in February to March for selected public elementary
schools: FlorentinaLedesma Elementary
School in Barangay I; Talave Elementary School in Barangay Punao; and Don Juan
Ledesma Elementary School, Villa Lina Elementary School and Cabunao Elementary
School in Barangay Palampas. Two rounds
of supplemental feeding were undertaken in each school, benefitting about 1,000
school children. In addition, the SCBI
clinic nurse provided free BP monitoring services to the parents and teachers
while the supplemental feeding activity was taking place.
In the
same period, SCBI also turned-over some items for the newly-rehabilitated
school health clinic of the Don Juan Ledesma Elementary School. In particular, SCBI supplied a refrigerator,
mattress and pillow (with matching linen), ceiling light, and orbit fan. The rehabilitation of the school health
clinic is a project of the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) of DJLES,
with P30,000 financial assistance from SCBI.
Funds for the project were turned-over to the PTA in November 2011. To make the school health clinic truly
functional, the SCBI Nurse visited the school for an hour every week in
March. The SCBI Nurse provided free BP
monitoring services for parents and teachers and attended to first aid concerns
of school children. The extension of
service was suspended after the closing of classes but will resume again in
June.
In March,
SCBI turned-over P 5,000 cash assistance
to the PAMASOL Fishermen's Association in Siti oMaloloy-on in Barangay Punao
for the rehabilitation of the canals for their mud crab project. This is an alternative source of income for
the residents. The SCBI Employees' Consumers Cooperative (SCBIECC) also
committed to help the association through the marketing of freshly harvested
crabs to its members.
Finally,
from the cash and in-kind donations of employees, SCBI distributed relief goods
(rice, water, sardines, noodles, bread) and old/used clothes to earthquake
victims in La Libertad. Other community
projects are planned for implementation in the next two quarters of the year.
San Carlos
City is the host of the first fuel ethanol distillery and cogeneration plant in
the Philippines (with sugarcane as its primary feedstock), and SCBI appreciates
the full support of the local government.
The company, in return, is supporting the City in terms of revenue
generation and employment opportunities which contribute to the improvement of the
local economy. SCBI values the support of the local residents and will endeavor
to uphold its social responsibility for the betterment of San Carlos. -SCBI-PR
