700 apply for passport, jobs in auditorium
About 700 flocked to the City Auditorium to get
passports and apply for local and international jobs during the Mobile
Passporting and Job Fair 2012, July 14.
The Department of Foreign Affairs-Bacolod Satellite Office with
its 14 employees, 11 international hiring agencies, and six local companies
were at the auditorium to accept express passport and job applications.
According to the DFA led by Director Joel Blas, the passports
will be distributed on August 4. Of the 400 plus applicants, several were
children guided by parents through the four stages of taking a passport.
Open to applicants were 2,973 overseas job vacancies that
include posts for nurses, civil and mechanical engineers, auto technicians,
riggers and construction workers. Among the six local companies were two
business process outsourcing (BPO) centers. There were 359 local job vacancies.
Leslie*, a 24-year old nurse at the San Carlos City Hospital,
said that she tried her luck at the booths of the international agencies hiring
nurses for Middle Eastern countries because she needs to earn more. She
particularly eyed a post as a staff nurse in a hospital in the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) and with her three-year hospital experience she is hopeful to be
hired. Horrifying stories of OFWs falling into abusive employers and at the
thick of conflicts do not scare her.
Prospective employers will inform applicants if they are hired
via phone call.
