Sixty-five donors shared their blood on September
18, at the Sangguniang Panlungsod, San Carlos City Hall for the Civil Service
Commission Anniversary.
In the name of public service and in keeping with this year's
theme: "Kawani, Ikaw Ay Lingkod Bayani," employees of the
local government and the different local agencies, including the Philippine
National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines took time off from their
daily routine to donate blood to the city's blood bank at the San Carlos City
Hospital.
Dr. Arneil Lawrence Portuguez, head of the City Health Office,
who supervised the bloodletting, said that SCCH now has a new blood bank which
can store more than a hundred bags.
Portuguez said that one percent of every community's population
should be blood donors.
SCCH dispenses of the blood two weeks before its expiration
date to hospitals in neighboring towns or in Corazon Locsin Montelibano
Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod where there are more patients who need
blood.
Aside from being a heroic act, donating blood also promotes
good health as it stimulates the body to produce new blood cells. Human blood
cells live for about 120 days.
