Women’s day backed with Youth congress

San Carlos City Children and Women’s Affairs Incorporation celebrated International Women’s (SCCAWAI) Day held at the City Auditorium last March 2, 2013. Their theme: ‘’Women’s Roles and Development, in Nation Building’’

The first part of the event was the Thanksgiving Mass at around 8AM at the San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral. Their parade followed which routed to the City Auditorium where a program followed at around 9AM. SCCCAWAI President, Mrs. Alexis T. Tugbo welcomed and acknowledged guests and participants from the different barangays of the city. This was followed by the opening remarks of the Chairman of Committee on Women and Family, Hon. Victoriana Cabili. The Chairperson, Committee on Education, member of Committee on Women and Family, Hon. Fleur de lis Mascunana gave her Women’s Month message which specialized on breaking the chains for equality on women’s rights and privileges.

Packs of rice were given to indigent women as part of the San Carlos City Children and Women’s Affairs Incorporation Poverty and Alleviation program. Women of Barangay I recieved 100 packs of rice, Brgy. II recieved and Brgy. III recieved 50 packs, Brgy. IV recieved 25 packs, Brgy. V recieved 60 packs, Brgy. VI recieved 125 packs, Brgy. Guadalupe recieved 300 packs, Brgy. Buluangan recieved 275 packs, Brgy. Palampas and Brgy. Rizal recieved 100 packs, Brgy. Bagonbon recieved 35 packs, Brgy. Punao recieved 60 packs, Brgy. Nataban recieved 25 packs, Brgy. Ermita recieved 20 packs, Brgy. San Juan recieved 30 packs, Brgy. Codcod recieved 50 packs, Brgy. Quezon recieved 40 packs and Brgy. Prosperidad recieved 45 packs.

Chain: Women’s Emblem

Most Women during the course of the event wear an orange collared-shirt with a printed chain on it. In the speech delivered by  well renowned public servant , City Councilor, Dr. Fleur de lis V. Mascuñana  explain the insignia of chain, “ Women are silent captive of this inequitable society. The chains on our shirts symbolize our eagerness to break free from the chains of gender inequality”

It’s impact to young women

In an interview with a female college graduating student from Tañon College who witness the event, Ma. Jesusa Constantino, when asked about the event’s impact to young women, she stated that: “As a young woman, the event simply reminded me of our importance in this society; just be a conventional woman who knows how to take her role in the community we live in. The event just gave us (both gender) the opportunity to take the best in each genders’ responsibility. As I said, be conventional that means doing away with the traditional view so gender inequality is a great trash.”

The San Carlos City Council for Youth Affairs held its first Youth Congress last March 2, 2013 at the Brgy. III covered court. This was participated by the Supreme Student Council and Supreme Student Government officers of different schools, namely: Colegio De Sto. Tomas Recoletos, Colegio de Sta. Rita, Central Negros College, Julio Ledesma National High School, Don Carlos Ledesma National High School, Tanon College, OLPMS and Sipaway National High School.

The delegates and guests were welcomed by Mrs. Cynthia Mirande. The aim of the youth congress was to develop the leadership skills of our young people.

Speakers were invited to tackle the different branches of our government. Ms. Marian P. Burgos first discussed the body that exercises supreme executive power which is the Executive Branch. Mrs. June Villarante discussed the Legislative Branch and the Judiciary Branch was presented by Atty. Florita Escorial. PCI Sonny Boy Bernus discussed about the PNP and the delegates actively presented questions on different crimes right after his talk. The K to 12 program was the center of Ms. Glenda Aranez talk on the Department of Education. The last speaker was Hon. Fleur de lis Mascunana on Parliamentary Rules and Procedure. After all of the speakers’ discussions, a workshop followed. The delegates were asked to present a mini-play on the parliamentary procedures. The congress ended at 5PM.
