Flood Evacuation Guide

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office officially publishes its "Flood Evacuation Guide: Plan ahead. Prepare your family."
Composed of short and easy to remember steps for preventing casualty during flood, the guide has six sections with topics on preparing for the flood, emergency supplies needed, flood warning guide, and evacuation procedures.
Here is the first section:

When Preparing for Flood…
1. Learn about your community's emergency plans, warning signals, evacuation routes and locations of evacuation centers.
2. Plan and practice a flood evacuation drill with your family. Ask an out-of barangay relative or friend to be the "family contact" in case your family is separated during a flood. Make sure everyone in your family knows the name, address and phone number of this contact person.
3. Post emergency phone numbers at every phone.
4. Inform local authorities about any special needs, i.e. pregnant women, elderly, disabled persons.
5. Identify potential home hazards and secure or protect them before the flood strikes. Be prepared to turn off electrical power when there is standing water or fallen power lines. Turn off gas and water supplies before you evacuate. Secure structurally unstable building materials.

*NRWP will publish the next section of the guide in coming editions in the name of Public Service to our readers.-Ed

Dream
By Roger Mar Lasco

I dream that someday
I'll be climbing on top
Of the mountain of gold
To toil the hidden wealth
Beyond my youthful years
That would make me happy and gay
When my hairs are growing gray
But it's just a dream
Like water in desert storm
Never give breath to earth
To feed the hungry worms
Because it's just a dream…!

But it's better to have a dream
Rather like fools that pull the moon
Chasing wildly the blue stars
Never shines across cloudy sky
But fools are contented and happy
When they toss the wine of fantasy
Over the cup of melancholy…!

Look at the vines that climb
In the branches of tall trees
Dreaming to catch the gusty winds
In the early morning breezes
The sun that rises in eastern sky
With its enticing beauty of golden rays
Slowly fading its glorious light
All of these reflect to great delight
That life like vines also climb
Like the sun sets and rises again
When early morning comes
Full of hope in the game of chance…!

Now, I'm climbing and struggling
To reach the highest peak of my dream
With flame of hope, patience and sacrifices
Are my weapons and my shields
To conquer the herculean tasks ahead

With God Almighty as my light and guidance
Now, I have molded the grains of my dream
It's now a reality that fits to my wish
To hitch my wagon to the stars
Today, I am now proudly waving
The flay of my success and victory
Now the story can be told
My legacy as I am becoming old…!

Fair ukay-ukay trade

I've held my one-cent worth of opinion on the trade fair war in abeyance for too long. After purchasing ukay-ukay (there is nothing else to purchase anyway) from both areas, I found out, to my dismay, that items are way more expensive in one than in the other.

Kuyawa no?

Publish and be damned

The decision of the Supreme Court to postpone implementation of the new Cybercrime Law gives time for public reflection and debate on a measure which was hurried into law without either. The issues raised are difficult ones and are being grappled within other countries, too.

Homily from Monte Agudo
By Rev. Fr. Rafael E. Cabarles, OAR

The priest 2
Excerpt 2 of the homily delivered during the
25th Sacerdotal Anniversary of Rev. Fr. Jorge Peligro, OAR

Independent: he is expected to be self-sufficient. He falls on the way-few willing hands lift him up. He lapses-his lot is seldom one of sympathy. He can be weak and impatient-no one understands. In the midst of finance and administration, in his own mind his vision of priesthood can be lost, if he cannot see it himself. Drained from generosity-burn out of his own selfishness. He needs your prayers as he stands alone. He is another Christ, in spite of all."
