WV youth camp in San Carlos
Close to 1,500 Western Visayan youths spent the one-week Regional Summer Life Skills Encampment in San Carlos City. The Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines (PYAP) held Sulong Dulong Skills Olympics and forums on youth-oriented topics from May 28 to June 2 for participants from all over Region VI and 90 percent of them are out-of-school youth.
Gelime Fia Lumawag, 22, PYAP regional president, from Bacolod
City said that PYAP's goals include to train out-of-school youths for
employment, develop their inter-personal skills, to make them productive, and,
in the process, to empower them.
Lumawag, who is an out-of-school youth herself, was only able
to finish her junior year of BS Psychology at University of St. La
Salle-Bacolod City. She added that although PYAP and all its activities and
programs are open to youth (15-24 years old and single) the focus is on those
who are no longer in school and are disadvantaged like those coming from
low-income families, the disabled, and the marginalized.
The summit in San Carlos is mainly about socialization of
Western Visayas delegates and for them to showcase their talents and skills.
Youth delegates also immersed in other activities including
Hataw ng Kabataan (a morning exercise program), sports competitions, speech and
dance sports contests.
San Carlos LGU, the summit's host, the Province of Negros
Occidental, co-host, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development
Region VI funded the program with about P 300,000. While the five provinces and
about 50 cities from all over the region sponsored the transportation and food
of their own delegates.
Lumawag said that there had been no security issues during the
summit and that the delegates enjoyed their stay and stroll in the city.
The weeklong camp was capped by the Miss PYAP 2012 beauty
pageant at the City Auditorium.
